As freshly baked community member who is not developing

I want to get clear instructions/information HOW- WHERE and WHEN I can contribute

Before I arrive at a DrupalCon (online)

Issue: I don´t find a menu point that gives me clear Information on drupal.org how where and when I can contribute
Issue: I don´t find a backlog of existing initiatives and issues in general
- example: I want to know in which group I can contribute with my specific experience/knowledge/skillset or if this group is missing at all
Issue: I don´t find information about what roles/jobs need to be fullfilled and if I don´t speak to individuals, I would not even know that there is a need at all
- example: wanting to contribute as a mentor for non-dev topics

When I arrive on Monday morning at the checkin

Issue: I don´t get any information at the check in. I would expect to get a recommendation where I can go (Role specific, e.g. Marketing Manager or Product Manager) to meet other like minded people and how I can contribute in general or at least at this event
Issue: I am missing an existing backlog of jobs to be done (issues I can work on)

When I arrive on Friday morning (Contribution Sprints)

Issue: I perceive that the "first time contributor sprint" is designed for developers only - I am missing an equivavlent for non devs
Issue: Even talking to the mentors does not get me to my contribution group - The knowledge on non dev topics is not existant
Issue: Per default you will get pointed to contribute to documentation which might not be everybodys cup of tea
Issue: I am missing an existing backlog of jobs to be done (issues I can work on)

Title: Arriving to Drupalcom as a Newbie Non Developer » Arriving to DrupalCon as a Newbie Non Developer
anthes’s picture

I'd love to contribute to this issue in the future, as I wrote it together with klucic - let's bring it to the next level!!

Next possible steps:

- interview more (non-dev) people about the problems they've faced/ add more problem cases
- goal: "Jobs to be done" list
- split into several smaller issues (per problem..)

--> based on this we can start to sketch actionable solutions

I am a non-developer who has made Drupal websites for six years now. I am available for interviews/questionnaires as the questions here are what I have been struggling with during Drupalcons 2015, 2017 and 2018! Happy to help.

Hallo! Thanks @rachel_norfolk for starting this project and @anthes and @klucic for documenting your conversation at Drupal Europe.

If I'm understanding the conversations correctly, this is directly tied to "Create 'contribute' section", yes?

Which falls under [meta] Identify and Address Documentation Pain Points

And [META] Structure Drupal.org content around areas of user activity

Bonus: "Folks want to know how to help improve Drupal's documentation but don't know how or where to jump in. Additionally, mentors and sprint leaders often assume that documentation tasks are a good place to refer newcomers or non-technical folk to, but are equally in the dark about where to point people to get started."
^ this one is especially interesting because it involves coordination with the mentoring team and dedicated effort to on-board new documentation contributors!

And the sibling issue from the non-developer table at Drupal Europe: Can't assign non-developer tasks

See also any "related issues" on those. Just trying to wrap my head around the entire picture and where work is already happening.

I have a feeling that this is something of a [meta] issue and it will spring a number of others. I'm going to add a few today, starting with links to headings in /contribute...

Thanks for the great work on this @rachel_norfolk!
I've only missed the links between the created and listed issues and this one (sort of like they originate from this) so I've linked them all.
It's an easy +1 for RTBC on my side!
Bests,
Balazs.
