Quite honestly, I don't exactly remember why this was kept separate in CCK. I'd need to ask pwolanin, who wrote that CCK patch.

Side note: I addressed most of moshe's other remarks there in my work setup, will feed patches separately.

Yes, that was back when the Field API D7 code was taking shape. I think we can close this now.
