I believe that the default value set for a field should not require validation. Validation should happen only on content submission. The current behavior prevent pre-filling fields with default values that are not valid for final submission event though that would ease the contributor work.
For example, it is very common to want to pre-fill a Link field URL with "https://" or a Link field Title without filling the belonging URL. Since validation will occur on content submission, there is no point in preventing the web-master to fill default value with whatever the want.
