When using a select list with the date module, the form shown to users has a fieldset.

I would like a way to remove this fieldset and just show the year/month/date as a normal field.

In Drupal 7, there was eventually a patch to add this feature (#1467712).

Not going to close this immediately, but #1918994: Improve Datetime and Daterange Widget accessibility introduced this for accessibility, which is a core gate (this particular issue is one of the issues that held up datetime_range).

I'm hesitant to add this as an option, since it will further complicate the test coverage on the widgets, and I don't think it will be accepted anyway (b/c the core gate).

You should be able to form_alter this to change the #theme_wrapper from 'fieldset' to whatever you want if you don't like the way this is working.
