It would be nice, if one makes the link field of menu link entities translatable, the menu system takes those translations into account. That way, it's possible to achieve a translation of the menu where editors can change the link target per language.

Attached patch fixes this IF the menu link field is altered to be translatable. If this feature request is accepted, I think this would need deserve test coverage also.

Version: 8.5.x-dev » 8.6.x-dev

Drupal 8.5.0-alpha1 will be released the week of January 17, 2018, which means new developments and disruptive changes should now be targeted against the 8.6.x-dev branch. For more information see the Drupal 8 minor version schedule and the Allowed changes during the Drupal 8 release cycle.

@fago, I've met a performance issue during usage of this patch.

I had to implement a custom hook_entity_predelete() to fix the issue. Here is a description from a helper class:

/**
 * Helps to deal with artifacts of translatable "link" field on menu links.
 *
 * menu_link_content_entity_predelete() deletes links pointing to the entity
 * being deleted. But it does this basing on the "menu_tree" table. This table
 * has only one row per menu item entity, so it does not include data from all
 * menu link translations (because Drupal does not expect the "link" field to be
 * translatable). Also, sometimes "route_*" columns (which are used by
 * menu_link_content_entity_predelete() to fetch connected menu links) are
 * populated from a menu link translation, but sometimes they are populated from
 * the original language. So we cannot really rely on the
 * menu_link_content_entity_predelete() and have to double check that all
 * connected menu items are deleted in hook_entity_predelete().
 *
 * Why it's so important to delete menu items pointing to a deleted entity:
 * If \Drupal\Core\Access\AccessManager::checkNamedRoute() catches
 * \Drupal\Core\ParamConverter\ParamNotConvertedException, it returns
 * AccessResult::forbidden()->setCacheMaxAge(0) which makes the whole render
 * array (menu block) not cacheable.
 */
class TranslatableMenuLinks {

I hope it's clear from this description what the issue is.

This issue is being reviewed by the kind folks in Slack, #needs-review-queue-initiative. We are working to keep the size of Needs Review queue [2700+ issues] to around 400 (1 month or less), following Review a patch or merge request as a guide.

The proposed solution will need test cases to go with it.
New functions should be typehinted.

Also it was reported this caused performance issues so think a review of that will also need to happen.

Thanks!

Version: 10.1.x-dev » 11.x-dev

Drupal core is moving towards using a “main” branch. As an interim step, a new 11.x branch has been opened, as Drupal.org infrastructure cannot currently fully support a branch named main. New developments and disruptive changes should now be targeted for the 11.x branch, which currently accepts only minor-version allowed changes. For more information, see the Drupal core minor version schedule and the Allowed changes during the Drupal core release cycle.
