I guess part of the code would need to get inserted in FieldConfigListBuilder::buildRow(). However, any HTML entered here gets escaped further down the line.

Required Field Display is a simple module to do this (that I'd be happy to have rolled into core).

It would also be nice to have an indicator if it is a single or multi-valued field using an infinity symbol for multi-value fields, such as:
