Problem/Motivation
In 2010 #842620: Update manager can't install modules using FTP due broken FileTransferAuthorizeForm was opened. This issue has changed focus to fix a bug in Drupal 8. The bug report was:
I'm testing the latest HEAD on a Ubuntu server, and I've tried installing Views by pasting the url into the update manager.
After I input my ftp info (which btw, it doesn't ask for in my Windows install?), it downloads the file, but fails in the end with the message:
# Failed: Error installing / updating
# Failed: File Transfer failed, reason: Cannot create directory /home/bojan/public_html/drupal/sites/all/modules/views
The modules/ dir is chmoded 777. The owner is my user, "bojan".
What could be the problem? Might be good to have a note in the documentation...
NOTE: A very similar problem can be caused by a host configuration error on your file permissions and/or ownership. However, in rare circumstances, it can also happen when all the permissions and ownership appear to be correct. The root cause of this bug has not been found.
If you are having this problem, please read through this issue and fix any permission/ownership issues you find. If that doesn't fix the problem, then report any troubleshooting information you have. Don't bother to report that fixing permission problems solved the issue for you.
Proposed resolution
Find the root cause of the bug. After reading all of the comments on the original issue we still don't have a solution.

charly71 CreditAttribution: charly71 commentedHi,
I've the same issue: Drupal 8.x and Drupal 7.x versions.
The update process is unable to remove the module folder if some file like .gitignore or .xxxxsomething is present inside.
If I remove these files and repeat the update process ends successfully.
I think it isn't a Drupal issue but a wrong server configuration. Anyway I am not able to find the solution...
Please help!

quietone CreditAttribution: quietone at PreviousNext commentedIs this still a problem? There hasn't been any further reports of the problem, that is, that file ownership is correct but file transfer fails in the 7 years this has been open.
Before investigating we need to know that the problem still exists and the steps to reproduce.
Since we need more information to move forward with this issue, I am setting the status to Postponed (maintainer needs more info). If we don't receive additional information to help with the issue, it may be closed after three months.
Thanks!
