We moved the required marker here #2152217: Remove theme_form_required_marker() from the theme system - use CSS instead to CSS from HTML. Sadly the character we chose doesn't display on IE9 & IE10.

The suggestion is to move to a small ✻ "Teardrop-Spoked Asterisk" to resolve this problem.

Other options are available from:

as pointed out by @joelpittet.

Teardrop-Spoked Asterisk ✻ ✻ looks ok to me.

(Note that the character originally proposed (Lower Asterisk : ⁎ ⁎) also doesn't render in Chrome 35 on Windows though it appears fine in IE 11 on Windows.)

I can confirm that it hasn't been displayed in Chrome 35 on Windows.

Although I like the alternate asterisks, there's already a patch at this other one so marking this issue closed.
