Field UI still has calls to $this->instance['widget'] - however, that key does not exist anymore. It currently doesn't crash either because PHP is simply dumb with keys that don't exist on an array.

Should be fixed in #2056405: Let field types provide their support for "default values" and associated input UI - so, postponed on that one instead :-)
