New items appear bottom of the list: 0 weight causing new items to appear at top of the list upon editing

After new items are added, they show up at the bottom of the list when "New items appear bottom of the list" is checked. Upon modifying sort order after this the new items have a weight of 0 and show up at the top of the sort list. If saved, the new items now appear at the top of the list. Is there a way that we can set the weight of new items to the next highest weight so they appear at the bottom of the list on the sort view?
