one of DebugAcademy's alumni has no college degree, comes from a poorer background, had been working 70hr weeks as a car mechanic, and has had to deal w/stereotypes about black men in interviews (i've attended one with him and seen it first hand)

and he let me know that he just landed a full time job as a Drupal dev! :partyparrot: super excited for him

the person who interviewed him was another DA alumni. they texted me during the interview asking for details / why he wasn't on top of his game. i asked him to give him a chance because he's always showing up to interviews tired from 70hr work weeks

xjm That's a thoughtful and empathetic interviewer, to reach out and understand the privilege most interviewees have and take the step to learn more about limitations on someone

really glad that they're giving him a chance. hoping he can finally stop working twice as hard (due to exhausting job) and improve his living circumstances

there are so many barriers keeping people out of tech, it's nice when people break through

Fantastic story! If you write about it at some point, I’d love to amplify that through things like @drupal twitter etc

• We are always working to make DDI channels a better place to work and communicate. If you haven’t already, please read our Guidelines:

Meetings are run by the leadership team - @sugaroverflow (she/her) @drnikki @alannaburke @sparklingrobots @mdrummond @gdd (he/him) @catch @rubyji and @ekl1773. This week it’s my turn to facilitate.

0️ If you’re joining us today, please introduce yourself (and include your pronouns). If you'd like, include your hot beverage :tea:

rachel_norfolk Rachel, UK, very aware that the best coffee in town always seems to be in the place with the worst wifi #homeworker
Nick Wilde Nick, he/him Victoria BC :canada: / T'So-uke lands. Hot beverage? Hot mulled apple juice with cinnamon sticks is good, but do that a few times a year. I really don't seek out any hot drinks - never done coffee, rarely any variety of tea. Yes I'm an oddity I know
starshaped Aubrey in Boston, she/her. I was drinking coffee earlier, but right now, no hot beverage in my hand.
krismaye Kristen (she/her) in MI :skin-tone-2:
I have some licorice spice tea that is wonderful :sparkles:
ekl1773 Elli here, wrangling the meeting from DCish USA, she/her. I thnk I had two cups of coffee already so should stop- favorite might be a hot toddy though.
sparklingrobots Tara, ABQ, NM, US/Pueblo lands, she/her/they/them. I converted to coffee in adulthood and will never leave it.
rubyji Ruby (she/her) on native Catawba land in Durham, NC. Chai latte with almond milk if I want something hot. But I drink cold coffee every day and that’s definitely my drink of choice.
mdrummond Marc (he/him) on Dakota land in the Twin Cities, MN. I normally drink coffee, but I went to a coffee and tea workshop a couple weekends ago, and a couple nights ago I made a drive to pick up a single cup infuser and some looseleaf green teas. I made my first cup of dragonwell green tea last night and quite liked it.
elissat Elissa (she/her) in the SF Bay Area on Ohlone land - - a code4lib presenter yesterday acknowledged the Ohlone before speaking!! - - I discovered chocolate chai in Brooklyn and can't imagine anything more fabulous exists
Amelia Rose Khan (nb/they/them) My first name is Amelia Rose, they/them, Hot Water
amyjune (volkswagenchick she/her) AmyJune she/her I’m not sure I like any hot beverages, iced Americano’s or my drink of choice
elissat I can't understand you frosty people!! Do I have to be tolerant because we're talking diversity and inclusion here?
Nick Wilde cold drinks are better. So much more refreshing
Nick Wilde muahahaha :stuck_out_tongue:
ekl1773 kinda surprised there's no ice cube emoji...
Nick Wilde :cucumber:
Nick Wilde cool as a cuke?
Nick Wilde or is that too close to aubergine?
elissat Doesn't feel cold enough to me
alexdmccabe Alex from Orlando, FL, US, he/him.
gapple Geoff (he/him) Vancouver :flag-ca:
Usually an americano in the mornings, and decaf earl grey tea in the evening.
starshaped I'm a big fan of decaf earl grey in the evening!
Nick Wilde :icecube:
alannaburke Alanna, she/her, checking in late from Pottstown, PA, US. Hot beverage is either coffee (nice hot sweet latte please!) or tea.
yesct Cathy she/her from Virginia USA. I like Jasmin green tea, and almond milk frapachinos with salt and Carmel

1️ DrupalCon Seattle! We’re six weeks from DrupalCon Seattle! If you’re attending, please emoji vote :rainbow-sheep: and if you’re speaking, mentoring, or volunteering, pls also vote :dancergunterpenguin:. If you’re not attending, vote :no_entry:

1️ :one: We're going to have a spreadsheet to sign up for booth volunteering, list sessions, and more. @sugaroverflow (she/her) is putting that together—- is there anything you need before we start boosting for sign ups? http://bit.ly/ddi-seattle-volunteering

sparklingrobots Looking at the sample copy gives me sugar cravings..... :candy:

1️ 2️ We've had a security backchannel in the past, @krismaye has volunteered to organize it this time around, thank you! @sparklingrobots will share info about that- anything else needed or that we can help with?

krismaye Not something I need help with, but something I was thinking about — would people in the backchannel be interested in chatting before DrupalCon so that we can get to know some other people who are going (if we don’t already)? I was thinking we could pair 2-3 people each week and have an icebreaker for them to chat about so people might feel more comfortable once they get to Seattle! Totally opt-in, of course!
sparklingrobots I love that idea @krismaye!
mdrummond I think that’s a really great idea!
ekl1773 I'm on board :slightly_smiling_face:
Nick Wilde I'd join. Despite coming from close, I plan to be :bike: rather than :car: so can't offer rides. Due to being a foolish young guy, still have some feeling of personal invulnerability (good trick given the number of times I've enjoyed the hospital system, but that was a long time ago), so don't feel the need for security for myself. But don't really know more than 3 or 4 people that might be there other than online so nice to ice break more. Also, I claim I'm safe, but I know there are problems with especially straight white guys making that claim. anyways I'm on board if I'm welcome

1️ 3️ Updates for our postcard for this DrupalCon/2019 more generally- @krismaye was thinking about taking this on as well! How can we support you? What updates might we want on the cards?

krismaye Yes, I can do the design for this, I just need to know what all we would like to have on the postcard!

Also if I can just hand the files off to someone else and have them worry about printing and such, that would be very appreciated.

mdrummond I’m going to be asking about interest in a potential event later on in this meeting… and that event if it happens could be something to have on the postcard. Stay tuned!
alannaburke last year we kept it generic so we could re-use it but i think we had a url, our twitter, etc, so that we could put info there. do we want to do that or do we want to make it event-specific?
alannaburke i like the idea of the generic card, makes it easy to fix anything on the other end
ekl1773 Definitely want it to stay generic, that's true- I can't even remember if it's two sided or not but that would make sense, and should be useful- maybe with some definitions and how to's or something. I should dig up the last version, that'd help...

1️ 4️ Any other DrupalCon-related topics? Are BOFs pinned down? Does the sponsorship doc need any updates? Here's the planning issue for more details: https://www.drupal.org/project/diversity/issues/3029620

ekl1773 Also the DDI session itself! https://events.drupal.org/seattle2019/sessions/diversity-inclusion-build... And this breakfast: https://events.drupal.org/seattle2019/better-together-diversity-and-incl...
mdrummond @rachel_norfolk We were wondering if the Better Together breakfast is something the DA has put together? It sounds like a great event, we were just curious.
rachel_norfolk :relaxed:
rachel_norfolk That’s my understanding. Actually, it would also be nice to keep the “Drupal Rainbow” bof too but Nikki not here this year. Anyone else happy to stand in?
elissat That was the one I'm most interested in
elissat What is involved? I'm happy to do whatever I can, but I'm not sure how much time I'll have available due to employment constraints. Maybe a lot?
ekl1773 @elissat To run the Rainbow BOF? I'd say some promotion, letting folks know it's happening, put together some discussion topics and an agenda beforehand, and facilitate the conversation during the timeslot.
elissat Sure, I could handle that!
ekl1773 @rachel_norfolk ^
ekl1773 Please do add to the planning meta ticket with child issues for tasks, questions, details, anything relevant!
rachel_norfolk Brilliant! It literally is being there to _start_ the conversation. Keep things moving.
rachel_norfolk I will pencil you in, @elissat! Wednesday at 1415
rachel_norfolk Room 203B
rachel_norfolk (Sorry for delay, had to pop out)
rachel_norfolk ^ @elissat
elissat I shall put it on my calendar
elissat April 10?
rachel_norfolk I will also try to pop my (very brightly blue) head in
rachel_norfolk April 11
elissat I definitely want to meet you at some point!
elissat My calendar says April 11 is a Thursday - am I losign it?
rachel_norfolk No, but I clearly am! :rolling_on_the_floor_laughing:
rachel_norfolk You're right

2️ DDI Initiatives! @mdrummond has some updates about the Speakers Initiative:

At DrupalCon Nashville, we had Jill Binder join us for some of our discussions. She’s done organizing in the WordPress community to help increase diversity of speakers at Word Camps with a lot of success through workshops. We recently met with Jill to discuss the possibility of working with her to do something similar in the Drupal community, and we wanted to check if there would be interest in an online workshop to help with session development. It would be four hours held over two Saturday mornings—so two hours each morning—and would include guidance as well as breakout sessions to workshop session ideas, pitches and outlines to help people from underrepresented groups to get started. We don’t know for sure if this is something we’ll be able to do or not yet, but if you would be interested, react with a :heavy_plus_sign:!

To be clear, this would be an *online* training, *not* something at DrupalCon or a conference.

mdrummond Or if you have questions or want to discuss, feel free to do so in this thread.
Nick Wilde  because it sounds like a good idea, but I wouldn't go unless there was a lack of attendees since I'm really not underrepresented.
elissat I absolutely love offering this to Drupalers - is this what we're saying? Or attending the trainings ourselves so that we can then help other Drupal people?
mdrummond @elissat There might be two different things we do. 1) A training event that helps people with developing sessions. That’s what I’m mentioning above. 2) A train-the-trainers event that would help us to develop a group of people that could carry on this work at camps, conferences and meetups.
mdrummond This is speculative at this point. We’d need to do some fundraising to be able to support this training, so we want to make sure there is interest.

Jill's insights last year were amazing.

(won't be going to dcon but would be 100% in support for this were I going)

alexdmccabe No :rabbit: this year?! :sob:
damienmckenna I know :crying_cat_face:

2️ 1️ Also, <#C76TQUQ2D|ddi-contrib-team> had a good week/weekend at Florida Drupal Camp and @alexdmccabe added a couple final issues before the Gender Field module can go to beta- please see the convo here for all the details and hop in if you like: https://drupal.slack.com/archives/C76TQUQ2D/p1550685924003400

ekl1773 Link straight to the issues: https://www.drupal.org/project/issues/gender?text=&status=Open&prioritie...
sparklingrobots We have a new novice issue if anyone would like to dip a toe into contribution!

Any others folks would like to highlight?

ekl1773 Anyone going to Drupal Mountain Camp? Drupal Camp London? Was nice to see some of you in Florida last weekend!!
amyjune (volkswagenchick she/her) Bad camp just announced dates, and we’re always looking to collaborate and discuss possible trainings if someone wants to get a Headstart
ekl1773 Ah ha! October 2nd - 5th, 2019
alexdmccabe I'll be at DrupalCamp London!

What content would we like to have there from DDI? https://www.drupal.org/association/blog/introducing-community-group-sect...

6️ Celebrations! We use this agenda item as a way of celebrating the wins - big or small in our community. We'll also use them to showcase things people have done or achieve. :tada:

I noticed a lot of the meetings issues are changing status to "fixed"... Are we no longer attaching transcripts? Or are they archived someplace else?
With comments dropping off SLack, it would be a good thing to have the meeting notes available somewhere.
Thanks for all the work on these meetings!!

sugaroverflow’s picture

@volkswagenchick - unfortunately, we had some technical issues in the past. I have notes from meetings, but they are not comprehensive enough (they're more action items) and at this time, we don't have the capacity to get those transcripts (Sally does this for us on a volunteer basis - and it doesn't seem fair to ask her to do 8-10 at one time) I've made a note of the days that weren't transcribed and we can get back to them later.

For now, we'll pick up from last week - Feb 21st and restart the transcripts.

Let me know if you have any concerns with that - we can discuss :)
