When I put the teaser break <!--break--> into a page node's body, the front page (that is showing the teaser) breaks down... the center (usually background is light color) doesn't show, and all the blocks in the right sidebar are now below the content area and have no css formatting.

Sorry for the confusion, but I think I figured out the problem - it wasn't the theme. I had an old node (from 4.x drupal) and it had a bunch of weird formatting/images/etc in it. That node was breaking all of the themes I tried. Once I unpublished it, the teaser break worked.
