I'm trying to take my site live but keep drupal in a subdirectory. I've made the necessary changes to the .htaccess file in the root directory, but when I change the base_url setting in the settings.php file, my slideshow and parts of my menu disappear. Any suggestions? Are there other places I need to change code?

Use firebug and inspect the slideshow element, you will know where is the slideshow image point to.
