The D6 version tracks only Drupal 7 modules. And have helpers to facilitate the upgrade to D7.

Drupal 8 can automate the core upgrade from D6 to D8, as all the plug-ins are included with Drupal 8.1. If you plan to upgrade directly from D6 to D8, you will need to do some homeworks and investigate all the contributed modules that you may use and see which one are available in D8 or not.
