Truncate Field

Hello,

Thank you for this great module and the strong support base!

I was wondering if someone could help me with this question.
I currently have a Last Name field in my content profile.

How can I create a field that will take the values of the last name field and truncate this field to one character.
For example: last name field = Jackson
last name initial field = J.
