I suggest to use Nivo slider instead of using your own slider
There are many pros doing so
1) Nivo slider is very flexible, lightweight and has many features and themes
2) There is already a stable nivo slider module that can be used to configure the slider
The only con I can think of is that it will require extra steps to setup the theme
You can see an example in the likeable theme, even the slider theme is quite the similar

Taxoman CreditAttribution: Taxoman commentedI think that it should be an option to hook into Nivo and use that instead, OR use the built-in slider.
For many sites it is great to avoid unnecessary module (and external libraries) dependencies.

Optalgin CreditAttribution: Optalgin commentedOn my site I managed to use Nivo slider instead of the built in one using the nivo-slider module and place the nivo lider block on the header region.
however I had to comment some of the CSS related to the built in slider due to conflicts.
I also gave up the original styling
Maybe it is better to change the title of this to issue to "conflicts with nivo-slider module"
