I would love to be able to add a custom caption to each photo on my page.

I have had to name my images A.jpg, B.jpg etc because my client wants his pics in a certain order. However, he also wants captions under the images. As you can imagine using the filename as caption option will not work for me in this case.

I found someone's patch which supposedly allows custom captions http://drupal.org/node/261673 which adds a checkbox with the following:

Show file's "Description" field instead of displaying of file name.
Check this if you want to show custom caption for image. Note that this file should be attached to some page at your Drupal site, so you can change it there. If no title specified or file isn't attached to a node, filename will be shown.

which would indicate to me that this hack will not enable captions for my images as my brilliant gallery block simply points to a folder full of images.

Is there currently a more flexible way to do this?

Probably a smart idea at this point to point out that i want the captions under each image in the display grid, rather than, eg, Lightbox
