Our team has a need to have different background images for desktop and mobile. However, the only patch to support this feature is targeting the 2.x branch #3195256: Responsive Plugins

The 2.x branch appears to have been under development for a few years now. However, unlike other d.o projects, there isn't a [META] detailing what blockers there are to generating a release.

Is there still a plan to work towards a 2.x branch? Is there a roadmap the maintainers could share so the community could help get it towards a releasable state?
