I had my site running nicely with my blocks in the place, (although some blocks didn't show up despite being enabled) on Garland theme (Drupal 6.1).
I then installed Pixture theme for Drupal 6.x so i don't have to touch the CSS to alter the design.
At this point i had 3 themes enabled (Marvin for admin page) and Pixture became my default theme.
Since that i lost my "User login" block. I tried to put it back through "administer - site building - blocks", but settings doesn't take effect!
This means that if i log out, i can't log in! (i manage to log in through blog, as it prompts me to log in if i want to write a comment.
And i manage to log in twice under the same name (although this double login happened to me via my first theme "Garland" through login block).
How do i get my "Login block" back on? And why some other blocks such as "language switcher" won't display?
P.S. I'm not in favor of upgrading to 6.2, as am afraid of losing functionality of some of my modules and perhaps even themes.

vm commentedyouc can always log in at yoursite.com/user
while this doesn't fix your problem with the blocks, don't fear not being able to get back into your system.
The probelm you are faced with, could be because of the block assign.module My suggestion is to turn that module off, clear out your cache tables and see if you can get the login block to show correctly using just core.
As far as not upgrading your site to 6.2 , this is a risk you take on your own. I would be more afraid of being hacked through the patched security holes in 6.1 and losing your entire site, then losing functionality of your theme, which can be fixed or your moduels which can also be fixed.
