Updated to 7.x-2.1 (2018-Feb-09) and site becomes inaccessible with Error 500.
Reverted to old version 7.x-2.0-beta2 and things work again

I don't have error.
I think you use old version php - 5.3. The PHP version 5.3 is very outdated. Latest version of php 7.2. Please upgrade to php 5.4, and your problem will disappear.

If I am mistaken, please provide an error from the page "/admin/reports/dblog".

I just updated to 7.x-2.1 and got the "HTTP ERROR 500" with the white screen of death. After I changed the PHP version, the site now works fine.

Please upgrade to php 5.4, and your problem will disappear.

Just add the php version to the info file. And write the changes into the release note. ;-)
