Thank you! Excellent contribution.

I had to make an adjustment for it to work properly with the Entity Reference by adding $form = parent::form($form, $form_state);

You can check? For example, with the author field of any content type by changing the reference method. Without adjustment, the configuration form is not updated when you change the reference method.
