I may be able to help port this, though don't know if other D8 background image modules might be redundant with this one. Does anyone else have a firm use case for backstretch over bg_image_formatter or bg_image?

From what I can tell, this module is basically the "poorman's" version (using the jQuery Backstretch library) of doing background images properly.

I just released https://www.drupal.org/project/background_image. Might want to check it out.

markcarver - does you module support multiple images for a background do a slideshow or carousel, this module does, unfortunately not for drupal 8.

this module states "If your image field allows more than one image you will get a slideshow "
