This sounds similar to what DrupalModules.com is using. It's certainly very effective there.

I wanted to put in a plug for consideration of http://hanshillen.github.com/aegisdemo/ for the autocomplete though in a D7 version as it's undergone a good accessibility evaluation.

This module definitely needs a stable release first but it appears that drupalmodules.com might be using the Finder module

Ahh, thanks to the pointer to the finder module. I'd be interested what you think of the autocomplete jQuery code in AEGIS' demo when you have time.
