There's more to this than the dev branch, atm there's also a dependency to ai_search 1.x where 2.x is available.

Is this project compatible with drupal/ai_search 2.x?

Yes 2x branch here has been heavily used to develop AI Search 2x standalone module (which has namespace drupal/ai_search per #3553545: Change namespace for AI sub modules being moved from AI core)
