Using composer I am struggling to get the module installed. This is because of the dependency on gmp by my local php environment.

Are you able to provide any documentation about how to install GMP locally; either for MAMP or DDEV?

Try uncommenting the line "extension=php_gmp.dll" in your php.ini file and restart apache.
problem will be solved.
