New docs contributors who were not software developers in a previous engagement and who haven't worked on software projects in the past are often intimidated by the issue queue.

So it would be good if we had some better way to introduce them to it, besides the text-only descriptions in the Contribute to Documentation section of the Handbook.

It was suggested at the Vancouver docs meeting 2010 that a good way to do this might be to make a video. eric_sea has offered to help (he's a Drupal Dojo organizer and expert at video training materials in general).

Title: Make a video on how to use the issue queue to contribute » Using the Dojo Webinars to produce videos

The Drupal Dojo conducts free webinars weekly and presenting, or asking the people in the Dojo to help find someone to present, on a particular topic is an easy way to have a video produced.

We try to make this as easy as possible. You can simply add your event to the "Building with Drupal" program line up. (Yes it is a 'wiki page') http://groups.drupal.org/node/52023. Please note these must be educational, non-commercial, programs.

Someone in the Dojo will then:

  • create a Groups.Drupal.org event
  • set up an event on the Dojo's web conferencing system
  • promote your event on DrupalDojo.com, Groups.Drupal.org, Twitter, IRC and a variety of other places
  • manage your event
  • coordinate with presenters
  • host your webinar and concurrent IRC chat
  • record your event
  • transcode the video
  • post the video on the video server used by the Dojo
  • update the various event posts to direct readers to the on-demand session in on DrupalDojo.com which
references both the IRC chat and contains the embedded video archive

These videos then be embedded or referenced as needed.

Please see http://DrupalDojo.com and http://Groups.Drupal.Org/drupal-dojo for more information.

If you are interested in our vision for the future development of the Drupal Dojo, please also see http://DrupalOpenLearning.org where we have proposed new directions for the Drupal Dojo as part of the Drupal Open Learning Initiative.

As to the specifics of accomplishing this task. Let me know how you would like to proceed. If you or someone else would like to present the material, you need only sign up for a date. If you would like me to produce this video, I would be happy to let's coordinate details. You can generally find me on IRC. I'm usually in the #drupal-dojo room among others.

The Document sprint this past weekend was great. I'll be looking forward to the next one! Thanks again.

Title: Using the Dojo Webinars to produce videos » Make a video on how to use the issue queue to contribute

Thanks for the information!

We still need someone to figure out what needs to be said, and make the video, so let's keep the title of this issue focused on that. We want to make a video on how to use the Documentation issue queue as a tool to contributing to Drupal documentation.

Sounds good.

I created a 'wiki' where people can help outline ideas... http://groups.drupal.org/node/112349

We'll use this doc to collaborate on the development of the content and then pull it back into this issue thread.

Unless someone wants to jump right in...

I was looking again at the contrib to doc section of the Handbook and I realized we don't really even have a text-based page about how to use the Doc project issue queue. We have a page on how to file issues, but not a page on how to find an issue to work on. So I think maybe we should start there, and that should give us the beginnings of a script for the video?

esmerel also said they have a page somewhere about Views issue queue, so that could be of help (she said she'd post it here).

eric_sea’s picture

esmerel posted the info on the wiki page where we'd thought we'd start to pull in content.

Please see: http://groups.drupal.org/node/112349

The primary post there is a wiki doc... we'll start to pull content in there.

The beginnings of a possible outline for a new Doc and Video on the Issue Queue AND a list of existing Issue Queue documentation have been added to the wiki at

http://groups.drupal.org/node/112349

Additional ideas and references are welcome!

This video has been done (by me) on Drupal Dojo:
http://drupaldojo.com/session/contributing-drupal-issue-queues

Should we link to it somewhere?

Hi Jennifer,
Opps we never posted the link for this video back to the issue queue. Thanks for doing that. Can we close this issue?

If there is a current discussion regarding this issue queue video or the need for others? Perhaps we should open a new issue with specifics. I'm happy to schedule time in the Dojo and help to get them done.

I would say to close it, except we might want to post a link somewhere in the Contributing to Doc guide?
