I love the way you can page back and forth between the pages, without loading the entire page again and without scrolling.

had a look at their source code and it's how I thought it might be.
Using jQuery, you could probably build this as well. The next button in Drupal has a class called class="pager-next active" so you could build something using jQuery when a link with class "pager-next" is clicked, you refresh the <div class="item-list">.
Below is what something like this MAY look like, but this is just very quickly typed up to give you an idea.
Of course, you would need to build a second, exact same function but for the reverse direction.
