I'm trying to setup a directory listing of group members, with a profile for each member including pictures. Is Drupal's user profile module flexible enough to accept multiple custom fields without chopping at the code?

This feature is implemented in the next Drupal version (you can try it from CVS, but it is not bug free). The profile module in 4.4 requires some code hacking.
