I first disabled this "primary menu" menu item in administer > menus - to no avail.

Then I deleted it . Still it appears both to auth and anon users.

Help!

Admin -> settings -> menu. Change the drop down to no primary links.

That one trips up a _lot_ of people. I haven't looked to see if it's any better in 5.x. I hope so.
