I am new to Drupal and currently using it on a test site. Today I tried to upgrade from version 4.7.3 to 4.7.4 (downloaded from Drupal.org)

I don't totally understand how to upgrade Drupal. I logged into my admin account on my Drupal test site, went to the administer area, turned off all the modules that I could, and clicked update.php

It said that it automatically detected the version of Drupal (but it didn't say what number). It then said that I could select a version from the pull down menu. When I looked at the pull down menu there was a list of numbers. The bottom number was 182 so I selected and ran it. It said that it made changes to "admin" or something. I don't understand what was changed.

Nothing appears to have been modified on my Drupal site. I didn't tinker with any files on the web server yet. Right now I just want to get a grip on how things work. I read the upgrading section of the handbook but I am still confused. Thanks for any help.

is generally for upgrading to a new Drupal release (new functionality and APIs etc eg 4.6-4.7) - not a new patch level (just bug fixes eg 4.7.3-4.7.4). The update.php is for upgrading the database schema, which as far as I know isn't ever required for security patches.

The new patch levels shouldn't actually make any (ideally) noticeable changes to functionality - just how things are implemented under the hood.
