1 - with "Enable JavaScript and CSS protection" enabled Safari just gives a white screen on an iPhone 3G S

2 - with "Promt to turn on JavaScript" enabled Safari just gives a white screen with a read one line message about turning on JavaScript

Are you sure JavaScript is enabled in Safari Mobile? If it's not - then, the described behavior is expected.
If JS is enabled on your iPhone, please provide information about firmware version. I've tested it on iPhone 2G with 3.0.1 firmware - works fine

*BLUSH* ... my bad ! when switching on JavaScript on iPhone everything just works fine ....
