Profile content type has become 'unlinked'

My Profile content type has become 'unlinked' from the users accounts and going to admin/content/node-type/profile > the 'content profile section at the bottom is not there meaning I cant tick "Use this content type as a content profile for users". If I disable the profile module and then enable it the profile content type disappears completely. Luckily I can restore is back

any ideas please
