I'm having a problem to get nodes to follow the !break! command to display a short summary when trying to create a node with the CCK. This is important for various reasons, anyone who how I can get this work properly?

I might be wrong...
Servus, Jon.
I might be wrong, but this thing doesn't work with CCK nodes AFAIK. That "break" line works with "regular" Drupal nodes, but CCK is the big difference here. To get a "teaser" with CCK you may create a "teaser field" where you enter the first few lines of that story/article... and forget about the break statement. Using views you can define what amount of information should get to the user choosing proper fields.
