I don't want to change any of the fields or formats, I just want to define a new node type so I can set different permissions and categories for it. Can this be done without loading the CCK module? I'm using 4.7.3.

But why not just install CCK? It allows for a lot more flexibility.

Trying to avoid excess complexity
I'm a relative newbie with Drupal and have already installed a bunch of modules for specific purposes. While CCK sounds wonderful and something I'll be using in the future, I'm trying to hold down the complexity and hence the learning curve. By installing CCK, I'd have a bunch more settings, menu options, etc. to wade through. Unfortunately, modules do a poor job of labeling their contributions to admin screens, so a newbie spends tons of time trying to figure out which options go with what modules.
That's the short explanation. :-)
