if there is a category term which itself doesn't contain any post, there is a note:

There are currently no posts in this category.

But this can be misleading in case there are no posts in the above category term, but there are some posts for child terms. User assumes that there are no posts also in child terms. In this case I suggest to add a note e.g.:

There are currently no posts in this category.
but there are some posts in subcategories.

Hi

I think that you have to write some custom code to actually display links to subcategories.
This is not really an issue related to the taxonomy menu module but more an issue with the taxonomy page.
