CVS edit link for Ben2010

My name is Ben De Groot and I'm running for Congress. I'm a 28 year old candidate for the 33rd district of Los Angeles County. I've been working in the technology sector since I was 16 and am running on a policy of open governance achieved largely through the advances of modern IT solutions.

With all that in mind, I've created a module for my site (www.Ben2010.com) that allows the user to find their local representatives simply by typing in their address. To do this, the module I've created uses XML to connect with the API at Govtrack.us.

The purpose of this module is to increase access to political information on a local level. I hope to feature this module prominently on my site to encourage average citizens to engage in local elections and hopefully to hold those who represent them accountable. I believe that this module will be of interest and value to the Drupal community and will be a small step a more vibrant democracy. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at Ben@Ben2010.com.

Thank you and enjoy the Module!

A little more about the module:

The district search utilizes jquery to search govtracks.us API for determining who your local US Representative is. Because of the confusing nature of Congressional Districts a zip code is not sufficient in accurately determining who your Congressperson is so a full address search is necessary. It is a relatively simple module but is effective in having US Citizens determine who their given representative is without having to leave the domain. The closest module that has similar functionality is http://drupal.org/project/cd_sunlight, but it does not provide a one stop solution for embedding a simple block to simply let you know who your representative is

Hello, and thanks for applying for a CVS account. I am adding the review tags, and some volunteers will review your code, pointing out what needs to be changed.

As per http://drupal.org/cvs-application/requirements, the motivation message should be expanded to contain more details about the features of the proposed module, and it should include also a comparison with the existing solutions.

See http://drupal.org/coding-standards to understand how a module should be written. In particular, see how the code should be formatted, and which Unicode functions the module should use.

Note that http://drupal.org/project/cd_sunlight does now provide simple blocks for searching and displaying who your members of Congress are.
