Touched off by the debate in #764558: Remove Trigger module from core I'm wondering if a major component of D8's development should be a careful consideration of all modules in core, with a critical eye toward what should remain in core and what should be pruned back to contrib?

Modules mentioned in that discussion as candidates for pruning: Actions & Triggers, Poll, Profile, and Tracker (others?). Is it time we removed those modules that see little use (or maintenance for that matter)?

We usually evaluate them individually and most of these have their own issues for removal already.

Exactly. Effectively, this issue is part of the epic #bettercore debate, which we won't discuss in a single issue.

That said, it most often makes zero sense to remove stuff. Instead, stuff merges into new stuff. Actions will be re-born when Views + VBO wander into D8. Poll most likely will turn into a poll field in D8. Profile was and still is discussed in detail elsewhere. Tracker will likely be eliminated by Views in core, too.

Better focus on doing stuff right. Simple answers are not always the proper answers.
