I am look to see how one can change the type of markers on points. I thought I had come across a setting page where I could set that by content type. But can't seem to find it anywhere.

2.x has the ability to do this by content type (by creating an OpenLayers Data Layer for each and styling each differently), it might be a little tricky / a hack to do it in 1.x.

There is no setting for this in 1.x, but you can do it pretty easily with any of the methods for variable styling: http://drupal.org/node/734526
