I would like to display the login block next (horizontaly) to the logo.
As I could see the logo isn't inside any region. Its area is defined in page.tpl and it contains also primary and secondary links. They are not in a block.
I've tried to create a block with the code for displaying the logo in page.tpl and assigning to any region but with no success (nothing is displayed).
How can I achieve it? Any idea?
Thanks

You need to create a region; search this site for instructions on how to do so.
Once the region is created, you can assign a block to it.
The region will broadly define where on the page the block is to be situated; use CSS to get the block placed precisely where you want it.
