"%profile[profile_last_name]" comes out as string value for anonymous users

i created a webform with firstname and lastname getting default values from %profile[profile_last_name] and %profile[profile_first_name]. this works fine when logged in but for anonymous users or users with no last name set, the last name field's default value show the string "%profile[profile_last_name]" in the webform instead of blank.
