Taxonomy manager within "EDIT node"

Is there a way this module can be used for a huge number of taxonomy items that needs to be assigned to a node? There are couple of thousands of terms within my taxonomy and it's impossible to assign a taxonomy term without using AJAX. Since none of those existing modules are user friendly as this module, I am wondering could it be modified for that purpose as well?
