Hello all! I was wondering if anyone has compiled a list of "Best Practices" for the installation and most importantly, on going care & maintenance of a Drupal powered site. Basically, I'm looking for answers to the following questions:

  • The best way to install Drupal to facilitate quick updates with the latest releases while preserving local modifications to Drupal distributed modules?
  • Is it better to have Drupal setup as the root of a site (e.g. www.xyzdrupal.com) or as a subdirectory (e.g. www.xyzdrupal.com/drupal)?

What it all boils down to, is this - I want to get things setup to allow for minimum maintenance / upgrade hassles while allowing me to customize and extend Drupal with functions specific to the site I am creating. I suspect that CVS/diff/patch can be leveraged to a great deal to aid in this quest. But while I am conceptually familiar with them, I am far from being an expert in their use. Especially when it comes to setting them up to use a combination of local and remote repositories.

It would be great if there was a "cookbook" or other resource to provide others in a similiar situation with guidance on how to get this setup from scratch for maximum development / upgrade / production flexibility.

I'd say install drupal in the root directory unless you feel there's a possibility that you might move some major parts of the sites away from drupal. That aspect of your question is not particularly technical!
