I've read several threads about using a common code base for multi-installs of Drupal...and am sure this seems like an obvious question to anyone who has run multiple installs before - but I couldn't find where anyone actually mentioned how/what using a common codebase makes things easier.

Am getting ready to set up multiple installs of drupal on a dedicated virtual server and want to make it as simple to maintain/upgrade as I can BEFORE I start (have nightmares just thinking about what could go wrong). Any words from someone with such experience/knowledge would be much, much appreciated! I've only run a single install of drupal till now.

1. What are the upsides to running common codebase?

2. Are there any downsides (or potential ones)?

Thanks!

That's a great article. Completely get it now. Multi-site good. :-)
