I am trying to write some blogs a few days ahead of schedule so that while I am away they will start appearing over the next few days. The problems is they automatically go to the front page despite the date I put for "published on". Am I doing this correctly or does drupal work this way.

Go to administer » content (/admin/node), check off your pages of interest and choose either "Demote the selected posts" or "Unpublish the selected posts". The first option will simply remove them from the front page, the second will prevent the public from seeing them at all and sounds like the option you want.

When you're submitting a post, you can change these options by expanding "Publishing options" and making your choices. Set the defaults for each node type at administer » settings » content types (/admin/settings/content-types)

Example: www.apt101.com
I have place a post on their for tomorrow 5-22-2006

It is showing up now. I am leaving town tomorrow and will be gone all weekend. I will not have access to the internet during that time. I would like the posts to show up on the "Author date" and not before.

Is that a better explanation. I may not have been plain in the first one.

I think the scheduler module is what you want, but it's not clear to me that the 4.7 version is fully baked:
