Straightforward Documentation on Configuring Multisite Support via MAMP on a Mac Using 10.4

Being completely new to Drupal, I'm still interested in building multiple sites locally using MAMP but have been quite unsuccessful. All I'm really looking for is some straightforward instruction for the absolute beginner to get started. I believe that modifying anything in Apache2 is out for me as I'm working with OS 10.4 (most support docs tend to assume users have all upgraded to 10.5 by now, but I'm a late-late adopter, obviously), and to date, even with two subfolders established in /sites/, install.php seems willing to configure only one site without allowing me to configure the second.

At first, I just modified settings.php in sites/default/ adding URL info for both sites, but the install.php script seemed intent on configuring only the first of the two sites listed. I tried replicating the settings.php file (modifying the URL info) and duplicating install.php within the subfolders, attempting to install more locally, but that hasn't worked either.

I'm hoping that someone has the dummies version of instructions for local multisite installation for a user of 10.4, with Drupal 6.x and MAMP 1.8.
