We need different versions of the Spanish language for the different countries where the Spanish is spoken.
At least create es_ES for Spain, as the neutral version from where many others could be developed.

kurkuma CreditAttribution: kurkuma commentedLanguage and country pairs should be created as per RFC4646, and there is a good list of identifiers already prepared at http://www.i18nguy.com/unicode/language-identifiers.html.

Jose Reyero CreditAttribution: Jose Reyero commentedWell, we talked this issue at the Drupalcon (Spanish BoF) and we agreed this makes sense and also there were a bunch of people who wanted the Spanish/Spain translation. So I've created the placeholder here http://drupal.org/project/es-es
I'd suggest we give people a break with the localization server which is at beta testing phase at the moment and we don't ask to create the translation there yet.
However, about this request, you don't just ask for a bunch of translations to be created. You ask for a specific one and also that needs people willing to maintain it. That's why I've just created the es-es translation so far, which is the one I'll be maintaining and also other people were willing to work on it.
We have now the issue of how we name the current Spanish translation. I'd like that one to stay as the 'neutral Spanish' version so we can name it something like Spanish (International). More ideas?

ibex CreditAttribution: ibex commentedCurrently, I see nowhere the Spanish translation files for download.
Should I wait a little bit, have the files by mistake disappeared or am I looking at the wrong places?

ibex CreditAttribution: ibex commentedThe files are again available on http://drupal.org/project/es.
No problem anymore.

ari-meetai CreditAttribution: ari-meetai commentedWhat about Spanish (Spain-International)? This way you standardize and leave it open for other regionalisms to add their own "International" versions, in case of need.
As for the Spanish version of the language, I would make it "Castellano (España - Internacional)", as Spain has more than one language spoken, to make it clear from the beginning.
I'm working on the translation to Spanish-International of Ubercart 2, as well as the correction of some Drupal regionalisms for my own project and I'm happy to share the results, once done.
Cheers.

Gábor HojtsyNote that for Portuguese, there are three versions on localize.drupal.org: Portuguese, Brazil; Portuguese, International and Portuguese, Portugal. I've opened an issue for you to figure out the setup of these languages on localize.drupal.org: #980710: Add Spanish (Cuba) and Spanish (Spain) to l.d.o, if there is interest that is.

Jose Reyero CreditAttribution: Jose Reyero commentedI think 'Spanish/Spain' and 'Spanish/International' is better as I've noticed people from other countries is sometimes confused with the term 'Castellano' (which is the official name for the language but only here in Spain).
This should start renaming the current 'Spanish' to 'Spanish/International' and creating a new es_es (Spanish/Spain) that in principle will be an import of the current 'es' version. Then we can move on from there.
Then we should be creating a new 'Spanish/[Country]' for people asking for their own regional version as soon as there's somone willing to be the admin/maintainer for each one.

Jose Reyero CreditAttribution: Jose Reyero commentedI think we better follow up here, as this is becoming more an 'infrastructure issue' than a 'language issue' #980710: Add Spanish (Cuba) and Spanish (Spain) to l.d.o
