If possible it would be nice once a field type set later and option given to change it to another field type rather than delete it if when it did not suit the specific need on that content type

-a Long Text can be change to Sort Text etc. and verso versa

Short text and long text have been unified, so this should not occur again. Other field types are different enough that a general conversion scheme is not possible.

A contrib script could address particular cases.
