Do you use the GNU-like system of using even numbers to represent stable releases and odd numbers for experimental versions?
Specifically is 4.3.x the most stable release?

There is no odd-even distinction. The latest 4.3.x version is to be considered the most stable version, since after 4.3.0 only bugfixes have been added to the releases. The CVS version is the development (experimental) version, which is nearly always moving...
