How is this module different from http://drupal.org/project/install_profile_api ?

It's different, since it provides a way to sync *existing* content. Install profile API aims for creating new content, but doesn't deal with deleting old fields, for example.

It should be said, though, that features might very well eliminate the need for this module - however, this will happen once features module will allow one to delete fields from existing content type.
