Is it possible to get the img src attribute from the node id? If not, where is it?? ;-)

I'm trying for days now to replace the secondary menu links with images. To complicate matters a user must be able to replace these images via the administrator menu.

This can't be that difficult but I really can't find a solution. Any help is very much appreciated.
